Beihai City got its name from the fact it borders seas in the north. It is the earliest treaty port and one of the starting points of Sea Silk Road. With its important geographic position and a total area of 3,337 square meters, Beihai has been one of the major commodity distribution centers of carrying trade for Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, Guangxi, Hunan and Jiangxi historically. In 2008, Beihai’s GDP reached RMB 31.388 billion with a per capita GDP of RMB 15,988.

北海市因市区北面濒临海而得名，是我国最早的对外通商口岸和海上“丝绸之路”起点之一，历史上是云贵、川、桂、湘、鄂等省与海外贸易的主要商品集散地之一，地理位置十分重要，总面积3337平方公里。 2008年，全市生产总值（GDP）达到313.88亿元，人均生产总值15988元。
