Haley Joel Osment, the child star in the 1999 movie "The
Sixth Sense," was sentenced to probation on Thursday after pleading no contest
to charges of drunken driving and marijuana possession.
Osment, 18, was also ordered to complete alcohol rehabilitation counselling
and pay $1,500 in fines as part of an agreement with prosecutors that called for
two misdemeanour counts to be dismissed.
The actor, who was nominated for an Oscar at age 11 for portraying a boy who
could see dead people in the blockbuster "Sixth Sense," was not present for the
hearing attended by his attorney David Wood.
Wood entered no contest pleas on Osment's behalf to misdemeanour counts of
driving under the influence and possession of marijuana. In California a no
contest plea is equivalent to pleading guilty.
Osment lost control of his 1995 Saturn at about 1 a.m. on July 20. The former
child star suffered a broken rib and a shoulder injury when the car flipped
over.
Prosecutors say his blood alcohol level registered .16 percent, twice the
legal limit in California.
