The Spanish bombings will have domino effects
wchao37  Updated: 2004-03-16 09:15

Ordinary people simply do not want to be associated with insecurity in their daily lives.

Who wants to go to visit his relatives in a neighboring town and never comes back again from his trip due to a bombing attack on his train?

Who wants to shop in a busy supermarket and stand right next to a car bomb or a suicide attack?

Who wants to be the accomplice of a bully in attacking another country and now 'rebuilding' the destroyed infrastructure through fatcat contracts to its own companies?

Who wants to be the target of wrath of the al Queda whose members include all ethnicities including Indians and Africans?

There is no way you can guard every train, bus, rickshaw of airplane that flies around the world on any given day.

There is no way you can check the background and status of everyone that enters your country through porous borders.

There is no way you can keep the profiles of every man, woman and child living in the world and use that as a data base to identify terrorists. There are so many people from wronged nations that are willing to die for their cause if they see gross injustice meted out to their religion or nation.

The only way out is to respect the rights and beliefs of other peoples and the sovereignty of other nations not only by words but also by deeds.

If you don't do that you will fail in your war against terrorism.

That's why I think the Spanish bombings will have domino effects. The people of all nations who do not want a visit from the el Queda will topple the governments that sided with Uncle Sam and now inviting the wrath from that terrorist organization.

That organization can thrive only where there are commonly perceived instances of injustice.

No use to search the mountains of Afghanistan and Pakistan inside out for their leader. Even if he dies the problem won't go away.

Terrorism will not disappear until the feelings of all nations and peoples are truly respected, and not until justice is seen to prevail in the Middle East.

Pre-emptive strikes to conquer the world?

That truly is for the birds -- especially in the case of a nation experiencing unprecedented double deficits up to its neck.
