Deadpan 

Deadpan一词的渊源和戏剧表演有关,pan在这里的含义不是常见的“平底锅”,而是戏剧表演中“脸”的意思。Deadpan意思就是expressionless face,即“无表情的脸”、“面无表情的人”,“不动声色的”。

例如:You feel choked to work with those deadpans.(和那些面无表情的人一起工作真让人无聊。)

1928年,deadpan第一次在《纽约时报》中出现,用来描绘一个颇具表演才能的喜剧演员。之后,deadpan开始被频繁的使用在戏剧行业中。

Deadpan还经常用来形容人讲笑话的方式。例如:

He is good at delivering jokes in a deadpan way.(他很擅长不动声色的讲笑话。)

跟pan有关的另一词pancake除了指“煎饼”之外,还用来表示戏剧中演员脸上厚厚的化妆品。爱美的女性对pancake makeup这个词组也许不会陌生,它就是化妆用的“粉饼”。
