Teenager in Botched Transplant Dies (2003/02/26)

Teenager in Botched Transplant Dies
Jesica Santillan

Jesica Santillan, the teenager who urvived a botched heart-lung transplant long enough to get a second set of donated organs, died Saturday, two days after the second transplant.

Jesica, 17, whose own heart had a deformity that kept her lungs from getting oxygen into her blood, received a heart-lung transplant Feb. 7. But because of human error, In the first operation, Dr. James Jaggers implanted organs from a donor with type A blood, rather than Jesica's O-positive. She was near death by the time the second set was placed in her body early Thursday. By early Friday, the newest organs were performing well but Jesica's brain was swelled and bleeding.

Santillan waited three years for the first transplant. It was widely expected that she would die waiting for a second because 200 people are waiting for heart-lung transplants and the operation is rare. Only 28 such transplants were performed in the first 11 months last year and 27 in 2001.

Santillan's friends and family mounted an aggressive media campaign to court a direct organ donation to her and raise awareness for donations. Santillan was at the top of the donor list when the organs became available shortly before midnight Wednesday.

Even under normal circumstances, she would face significant odds for a full recovery. About 79 percent of heart-lung recipients survive a month after surgery.

Duke officials are still investigating what led to the Feb. 7 error.
