Armored vehicles to safeguard summit

Three state-of-the-art armored vehicles will join the anti-terror operation to maintain security during this year's Asia-Pacific Cities summit in Chongqing, said armed police officers in the southwestern municipality.

The maximum speed of the vehicle is 100 km per hour and maximum range of communication is more than 2,000 km at least. On its tailis a monitor that rotates 360 degrees and performs real-time transmission of pictures and videos to the command headquarters.

Once the oil tank is filled, the vehicle can travel up to 850 km, a spokesman with the Chongqing Armed Police told Xinhua.

He said the same vehicle has joined Chinese anti-riot policemenin their international peacekeeping mission to Haiti

The 2005 Asia-Pacific mayors' summit is due for Oct. 11-13 in Chongqing. Seventy-nine cities have confirmed attendance to the event, including 48 from Asia, 21 from Oceania, six from Europe and four from America.
