Plan your travel and arrive early

When you begin planning your visit to the Olympic Games, allow extra time for your travel. Athens will be filled with excitement and activity as spectators, athletes, officials and volunteers make their way to Olympic venues. Your cooperation and patience will help everyone to have a great Olympic experience. Watch this website in 2004 for detailed advice on planning your travel.

Wear appropriate footwear and clothing

August in Athens is hot and dry (the average temperature is 31 °C - 87.8 °F), so for your own comfort plan on wearing light clothing and walking shoes. As you may have to walk longer distances than usual, don’t carry heavy items. Only small bags are permitted at venues. Take a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen (SPF30+).

Safeguard your tickets

Treat your ticket like cash. Lost, stolen, or forgotten tickets cannot be replaced. All spectators, including infants, must have a valid ticket to enter a venue.

Items you cannot bring with you

Large bags, coolers, food & drink and a number of other items will not be permitted at venues. You can view a list of such items here. There will be no coat check or storage at venues so it is important to be aware of what you can or cannot bring.

Cooperate with Security

For the safety and security of all, Olympic Venues will have a security screening process, similar to those at international airports. Be prepared to have your bag and the contents of your pockets inspected.

There is no re-entry

Once you enter an Olympic Venue, you will not be able to leave and return.

Medical Coverage

All official Olympic Venues will offer first aid and emergency health care free of charge. A dedicated ambulance transfer service will be provided from venues to a designated Olympic Hospital. However, care provided at a public hospital for chronic cases or in private clinics for any illness will be billed to the patient. For EU Nationals all relevant EU directives and procedures (E111 and E112 forms) apply. All other travellers to the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games should ensure and verify they have adequate health insurance or obtain supplementary health insurance before travelling to Greece.

Health tips

To ensure you continue your usual medication regime you should carry all regular medications with you at all times. Water can be purchased at all Olympic Venues, however it is important in the heat of the Athens summer to stay well hydrated before leaving home and while travelling to venues. If you are feeling unwell, and require medical assistance when you are in an Olympic Venue ask any of the ATHENS 2004 uniformed staff for help. Alternatively, make your way to the closest medical facility.

Smoking at Olympic venues

Smoking is not permitted in the seating, circulation or queuing areas of any Olympic Venue, however dedicated smoking areas are provided in most venues.

Environment

Recycling stations with clear signage will be available throughout Olympic Venues. Please follow the recycling guidelines printed on food and beverage packages. Assistance will be provided by appropriately trained staff. All spectators are requested to follow waste management guidelines. Your cooperation is vital to the success of this programme.

Photography

Flash photography is not permitted at certain events. Further information on flash photography will be published here in 2004. The use of broadcast or photographic equipment for commercial purposes is prohibited.
