Hunan has a long history and old civilization. Over 30 Old Stone Age ruins and 900 Neolithic Age sites have been found. A 2100 year –old well preserved woman corpse unearthed in 1972 was considered a wonder of world archaeology, and the skin of the woman was still elastic when the corpse was dug out from the tomb. Wujian (bamboo slips of the Wu Kingdom in the Period of the Three Kingdoms) discovered at Zoumalou of Changsha and Qinjian (bamboo slips of the Qin Dynasty) unearthed at Liye of Longshan County are of important archaeological value. Cai Lun, inventor of papermaking , one of the four great inventions of ancient China, Wang Fuzhi, a great thinker living in late Ming and early Qing dynasties, Wei Yuan, Tan Sitong, Huang Xing and Cai E, initiators of contemporary new ideas and forerunners of the Old Democratic Revolution, are cream bred on this part of land. In the history of modern revolution, a large number of founders of New China , such as Mao Zedong, Liu Shaoqi, Ren Bishi, Peng Dehuai, He Long and etc., are natives of Hunan. The people of Hunan have all along attached great importance to culture and education. Primary and middle schools, universities and colleges throughout the province turn out hundreds of thousands of various talented people for the country every year. Professor Chen Guoda, founder of the Theory of Geodepression and Professor Yuan Longping , " father of hybrid rice " , working in Hunan, are both world celebrated scientists. In recent years, a number of cultural undertakings , such as broadcasting and television, press and publicatio, have grown rapidly.
