Hospital fire kills 39 in Jilin

Thirty-nine people, 33 of them patients, were killed Thursday when a fire ripped through a hospital in Liaoyuan, Northeast China's Jilin Province.

Rescuers have found the remains of 24 victims and 15 others died in failed emergency treatment after being transferred to other hospitals, the Xinhua News Agency reported.

Initial investigation showed the fire started from the power distribution room. Further probe is underway.

At least 33 of the victims were in-patients of the Liaoyuan Central Hospital, where the fire broke out at about 4:30 in the afternoon, according Xinhua.

245 in-patients were staying at the largest hospital in the city at the time of the fire. 152 of them have been rescued and transferred to other hospitals in the city and in neibouring Tongliao City, sources with the hospital said.
