In recent years, Russia has held similar exercises with the United States, India, Japan and a series of North Atlantic Treaty Organization countries, Ivanov said.

"Why can Russia not conduct a military exercise with China? I cannot see any reason," Xinhua quoted him as saying.

He added that the two countries are maintaining good friendship, and bilateral trade also keeps growing.

This being the case, it is reasonable for the two countries to increase their co-operation in the defence and military industry sectors, the Russian defence minister said.
