Pan Yujun, 42, was found early in the morning hanged in a graveyard in Huangpi District in Wuhan, capital city of Hubei.

Pan was one of the investigating officers in the case of She Xianglin, who was convicted of murdering his wife in 1994.

He was subsequently sentenced to 15 years in jail.

But She was declared innocent soon as the wife returned to her hometown earlier this year.

She, a former security guard, said police officers tortured him into confessing to the murder and is demanding state compensation.

Pan was under investigation by the provincial Commission for Discipline Inspection, the political and law committee and the provincial people's procuratorate since May 21, said an official on condition of anonymity.

The provincial discipline inspection commission reported Pan's death to the Public Security Bureau in Jingshan County. Pan was an officer of the bureau.

One of Pan's family members said before apparently hanging himself, Pan called his wife Zhang Yinlan twice.

"He said he was 'leaving' and asked her to take good care of their child," said Zhang Jinjiang, the wife's brother.

Zhang said the family has already started making arrangements for Pan's funeral.

Two other police officers involved in the case were also being investigated including Lu Dingcheng, who was the chief investigator in She's case.

Lu was later promoted to deputy director of the Public Security Bureau in Jingshan County.
