Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas threatened to use "an iron fist" against anyone who violates a cease-fire with Israel, his toughest statement against militants since taking office in January.

Abbas has been under heavy pressure by Israel and the United States to take tougher action against militants. But so far, he has preferred to negotiate with gunmen.

"We will hit with an iron fist anyone who violates the Palestinian national interest and agreement," Abbas told a group of Palestinian police in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday. His comments were reported in the Palestinian daily al-Hayat al-Jadida on Thursday.
