Arsenal moved back into second place in the
English Premier League by beating Newcastle 1-0. Dennis Bergkamp scored
the only goal for the defending champions, who trail leader Chelsea by 10
points.
Arsenal had dropped to third place Saturday when Manchester United beat
Aston Villa 3-1, but Bergkamp's goal keeps Arsenal's slim title hopes
alive.
"We're going to try and make it difficult for them," Arsenal captain
Patrick Vieira said. "Of course, they are in a good position, but
mathematically it is still possible so we must fight like we did today."
Bergkamp took a cross from Mathieu Flamini in the 19th minute, expertly
controlled the ball and fended
off a defender before pushing the ball past Newcastle
goalkeeper Shay Given for his first goal since August. Two minutes later,
Given knocked a shot from Thierry Henry around the post as Arsenal
dictated play.
"If Shay Given had not been there it would have been more," Henry said.
"But we won and that's the most important thing."
Chelsea, which beat Portsmouth 3-0, leads the league with 61 points after24 games, followed
by Arsenal with 51 and United with 50.
