Massu reaches Palermo quarterfinals

Defending champion Nicolas Massu reached the quarterfinals at the Campionati Internazionali di Sicilia when Potito Starace quit with a stomach illness while trailing 4-1 Thursday.

The top-seeded Massu, an Olympic gold medalist in singles and doubles, now meets fifth-seeded Filippo Volandri, who beat Spanish qualifier Galo Blanco 6-2, 6-1.

In other action, eighth-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic rallied to defeat Jose Acasuso 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 to get to his second career quarterfinal. Berdych, 18, upset top-ranked Roger Federer in the Olympic tournament.

Berdych will play Italian wild card Andreas Seppi, who advanced when Kristof Vliegen stopped with an ankle injury while losing 6-4, 3-6, 4-1.

Friday's other quarterfinals are No. 4 Nikolay Davydenko vs. No. 7 David Ferrer, and Olivier Mutis vs. Juan Monaco.
