Arie Haan faces sanction for refusing runners-up medal

China's coach Arie Haan is facing disciplinary action for refusing to collect his runners-up medal after his team lost the final of the Asian Cup on Saturday.

Asian Football Confederation general secretary Peter Velappan promises AFC members would instigate disciplinary measures against Haan on charges of bringing the game into disrepute.

He says the Chinese Football Association will be getting a letter and the AFC disciplinary committee will deal with the case.

In response, Arie Haan says he does not regret his actions and he would do it again.

The Dutchman says Mr Velappan should look at his own actions during the competition and notes that the AFC should also start by looking at refereeing decisions he claimed cost China the title.

The China coach says he had told his players to collect their medals.

It's the second time he has refused to take his medal since the World Cup in 1978, when the entire Dutch team did not go up to collect them after losing to Argentina.
