Chinese Foreign Ministry has lodged a complaint with the Japanese embassy to China over a Japanese Football Association mistake concerning Taiwan, sources said Thursday.

On Aug. 2, Chinese journalists learned at a press conference held by the Japanese football team in Jinan, Shandong province, one of the hosting cities in China for the Asian Cup, that the Japanese brochures for the event contained a map of Asia on which China's mainland and the Taiwan island are marked in different colors.

The Shandong Provincial government and the Chinese organizing committee of the Asian Cup complained to Japan as soon as the error was noticed. Officials from the Chinese Foreign Ministry also complained to the Japanese embassy to China, urging Japan to correct the mistake and to eliminate "negative influences."

Japan agreed to recall the brochures. The leader of the Japanese Football Association made a statement Tuesday saying that Taiwan is part of China, just like Hong Kong and Macao.
