Olympic Arrangements in Patras Updated: 2004-06-29 09:13 Patras will be hosting the
Football Tournament from 11 August to 23 August 2004 in which 22 teams will be
taking part. Measures and special arrangements to apply in the Olympic City of
Patras from 6 August to 24 August 2004 have been worked out by OCOG ATHENS 2004,
in cooperation with all agencies involved: central administration, local
government and representatives of local organisations.
The purpose of the measures is to provide the best possible services to
visitors to the city and to the footballers playing in the matches, safeguarding
in parallel the normal daily life of the city’s residents. This is intended to
make Patras, with its Olympic operations and Olympic sport, a magnet to visitors
and residents alike.
Arrangements
For regulating traffic in the city the following transport management policy
will be implemented:
Primary Olympic Routes will be designated for rapid transport of the Olympic
Family and spectators.
A Controlled Access and Circulation Zone (CACZ) will be designated around the
Pampeloponnisiako Stadium and will include the following streets: Seferi,
Pelopos, Patron-Clauss and Diakoniari. Permanent residents will be supplied with
special accreditations, allowing them to enter this area.
Existing stopping & parking prohibitions will be stepped up in areas of
Olympic interest.
Special traffic arrangements will be in force in the area around the Port of
Patras, and the Araxos main provincial road of Araxos in the Municipality of
Larisos.
Along the entire length of Olympic Routes, stopping & parking
prohibitions will apply, with stringent enforcement and control by the Police.
‘Park and ride’ facilities will be created in the Patras Port and Carrefour
areas.
Bus line Νο. 7, which crosses the CACZ along Patron-Clauss, will be rerouted.
A plan is also developed to divert traffic that would otherwise travel within
the CACZ.
Taxi parking spaces will be provided near the Pampeloponnisiako Stadium on
the edge of the CACZ.
Public Transport will operate according to the normal daily schedule. In
parallel, ATHENS 2004 and the Achaia Urban Bus Company are planning to establish
specific lines for the use of spectators and persons working in the
Pampeloponnisiako Stadium.
