Former governor given jail term for bribery

Liu Changgui, former vice governor of the southwestern China province of Guizhou, was sentenced to 11-year imprisonment Friday on charges of taking bribes and owning a huge amount of property he could not account for.

The sentence was handed down by the Intermediate People's Court of Zunyi City at the first trial held on Friday morning.

Liu, 58, was a technical school graduate and had not received higher education. He served as acting mayor and mayor of Guiyang city, the provincial capital between 1994 and 1997, and was elected vice governor of Guizhou in 1997. He was arrested in April2003 on charges of bribery.

The court verdict said Liu accepted bribes totaling 1.34 million yuan (US$162,500) between 1995 and 2000 from two local companies and he owned another 1.7 million yuan (US$204,700) of personal property he could not account for.

The court also ruled that 300,000 yuan (US$36,100) of Li's personal property be confiscated.
