As flames shot out of the window in Chou's seventh-floor flat, ETTV cable news showed the singer walking on the sidewalk outside and talking on a mobile phone.

Chou, who appeared uninjured, didn't speak to reporters. The news station said he and his brother were leaving the apartment at 7 a.m. when they noticed smoke in the living room. They were unable to extinguish the flames with a fire extinguisher, the report said. ETTV showed firefighters dousing the blaze. The extent of the damage wasn't immediately known.

F4 became a huge hit in Asia's ethnic Chinese communities _including those in China, Indonesia, and Singapore _about two years ago, after the band's four members starred in the Taiwanese soap opera "Meteor Garden." The show eventually aired across the region.

They played spoiled rich kids who chased girls, sang songs and posed in expensive designer clothes at an elite high school in Taipei, Taiwan.

China banned "Meteor Garden," calling it a threat to young minds.

Cashing in on their TV success, the four actors went into music. Their concerts and CDs have been a huge success. Fans caused a stampede at a 2002 Hong Kong performance. Some had to be carried away by police.

The other band members are Vanness Wu, Jerry Yan and Ken Chu.
