Auto imports top 51,000 in first quarter

China imported 51,205 motor vehicles in the first quarter, up 8.2 percent over the corresponding period last year, statistics from the Ministry of Commerce show.

The figure included 35,554 sedans, up 33.9 percent year-on-year, 2,700 trucks, up 40.4 percent, and 7,328 off-road vehicles, down 44.9 percent.

According to the statistics from Chinese customs, the nation imported US$4.092 billion worth of motor vehicles and components from January to March this year, an increase of 33.7 percent from a year earlier.

This included US$1.559 billion from complete vehicles, US$850 million from key components, and US$1.683 billion from parts and accessories.
