A 4-year-old Hong Kong boy plunged seven stories after leaning out of an apartment window but survived when a canopy broke his fall, officials said Tuesday.

The boy was found, conscious and crying, after he bounced off the canopy and hit the ground on Monday, police spokeswoman Kelly Chan said. The boy had been left home alone and his mother was arrested for suspected negligence, Chan said.

The boy was hospitalized in stable condition on Tuesday, government spokeswoman Joyce Chan said. A newspaper, the South China Morning Post, reported that he suffered head injuries, but officials had no immediate information on his injuries.
