_ 2000-2004: Briton Harold Shipman was convicted of killing 15 patients and later was found to have murdered at least 200 more, mostly by lethal injection. He was found hanged in his London prison Tuesday.

_1994-1995: South African Moses Sithole convicted of raping and strangling 38 women in the Johannesburg area. He was sentenced more than 2,400 years in jail.

_ 1994-95: Briton Fred West hanged himself in prison on Jan. 1, 1995, while awaiting trial in the murders of a dozen girls and women. The victims included his wife's 16-year-old daughter and 8-year-old stepdaughter and several young runaways.

_ 1992-1993: Australian Ivan Milat convicted of slaying seven young backpackers in 1992-93, the nation's worst serial killing. He was sentenced to life in prison.

_ 1982-1998: Gary Ridgway, pleaded guilty to killing 48 women in Seattle-area "Green River" killings. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

_ 1981: Peter Sutcliffe, known as the Yorkshire Ripper, admitted at his trial that he killed 13 women, mostly prostitutes, in northern England during a five-year period. He was sentenced to serve a minimum of 30 years.

_ 1978-1992: Jeffrey Dahmer, sentenced to 16 consecutive life terms for killing 17 men and boys, most in Milwaukee. Was killed in prison in 1994.

_ 1978-1983: Scottish-born Dennis Nilsen, 57, was sentenced to life in 1983 after admitting he murdered 15 men between 1978 and 1983.

_ 1977-1978: Ted Bundy, convicted of three Florida slayings, including that of a 12-year-old girl. Bundy confessed to more than 30 killings. Executed in 1989.

_ 1976-1977: David Berkowitz, aka "Son of Sam," killed six people and wounded seven others in New York City. Serving six consecutive 25-years-to-life sentences.

_ 1972-1994: Russian Andrei Chikatilo convicted and executed in 1994 for killing and mutilating 52 women and children in Russia over a 12-year period.
