Blast kills eight in Afghan city of Kandahar
( 2004-01-06 17:23) (Agencies)

Eight people were killed and several wounded on Tuesday in a powerful explosion in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar, witnesses said.

They said the blast ripped through a truck parked opposite a military base in the center of the city at around 12:30 p.m. (3 a.m. EST). Witnesses saw bodies and injured people on the ground close to the damaged truck.

Kandahar is the former stronghold of Afghanistan's ousted Taliban, which has declared a "jihad" or holy war on foreign and government troops and aid workers.
