Victims of Japan's chemical weapons register for compensation
( 2003-12-30 10:41) (Xinhua)

The Chinese victims of Japan's abandoned chemical weapons in Qiqihar began Monday to register for compensation from the Japanese Government.

The Qiqihar branch of the China's Industrial and Commercial Bank will deposit the compensation into bank accounts opened for the victims.

By 4:00 p.m. Monday, some 40 victims had registered.

A toxic gas leak killed one person and injured 43 others after barrels of mustard gas were dug up at a construction site in Qiqihar in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province on Aug. 4.

The lethal and environmentally-threatening chemical weapons were abandoned by Japanese invaders during World War II.
