( 2003-12-02 00:59) (Xinhua)

An explosion in front of bank in Haiicheng city of Northeast China's Liaoning province killed two people and injured 17 others Monday morning.

The explosion happened at 8:05 a.m. Monday in front of a branch of the Haicheng Rural Credit Cooperative in Xiliu town, Haicheng city.

Local police said a man has been arrested on suspicion of causing the explosion.

The man was spotted acting suspiciously. He was arrested when he tried to escape questioning, said police.

Police claimed to have seized a remote controller and detonators from the man.

According to Luo Rongguang, head of the public security bureau of Haicheng, the suspect, identified as Yang Changguo, 39, was a farmer from Maoqi town of Haicheng. He allegedly planned to detonate a bomb to steal 220,000 yuan (US%26,500) from the premises.

The two dead have not been identified, and two of the injured were still in serious condition.
