China must make it clear that its growth poses an opportunity for the rest of the world, not a threat, French Minister of Economy, Finance and Industry Francis Mer said in Beijing on Saturday.

Mer delivered that message in a speech at the annual gala dinner of the French Chamber of Commerce in China.

He mentioned that certain countries have recently reacted strongly to the development of Chinese exportations.

"It is possible to avoid many misunderstandings, even hostile reactions concerning China's development, as long as we know how to explain that we are not facing a losing game, but a win/win situation, if we know how to make the most of the opportunities and the chance to build a better world together," he said.

China is not only exporting, he pointed out, "it is also true for the producers or service providers of our countries, that Chinese imports are rising, quicker than exports actually."

The minister said he came to China to offer the French Government's support to French companies working in the Chinese market. Today he will talk with Chinese representatives.

As Chinese companies are internationalizing and investing overseas, France must show Chinese decision-makers the trump card it holds in Europe, Mer said.

Although this has been a difficult year for France and its neighbours, a series of reforms were carried out in France which are essential steps in the structural adaptation of its economy, he said.

The French Government's action in favour of business will remain resolute in the coming year, he said.
