Chinese women judokas shine in Qingdao international
( 2003-11-30 10:14) (Xinhua)

The Chinese women judokas stole the limelight on Saturday by taking three titles at the 3rd Qingdao Judo International in Qigndao.

Liu Xia, winner at the Pusan Universiade, awarded China its first gold medal by beating Sugimoto Mika of Japan in the women's 78kg-plus class. The bronze medal went to Fan Sicun, a budding woman star, tipped as the hope for the Chinese national judo team in 2008.

Xu Yan contributed the second gold to the hosts, winning women' s 78kg title with the expense of teammate Qiu Dongna in less then 3 minutes. Nakazawa Sae of Japan and Cho Soo-Hee from South Korea shared the bronze medals.

China's third gold came from Wang Juan in the women's 70kg class, who outwitted defending champion Koga Yukie of Japan, with the bronze medals going to French Garofalo Sandra and Canadian Roberge Catherine.

South Korean Lee Bok-Hee broke the monopoly of the Chinese women, beating Olympic runner-up Li Shufang en route to her final clash against Zdenkova Danuse of the Czech Republic in the women's 63kg. And Lee became the sole non-Chinese woman winner on Saturday.

However, the Chinese men athletes only had their eyes feasted on the titles, by sharing a pair of bronze medals in four finals of the day.

Japan bagged three gold medals in 100kg, 90kg and 81kg classes, while Hong Song-Hyun of South Korea won the men's 100kg-over title.

Organized by the International Judo Federation and Chinese Judo Association, the 3rd Qingdao Judo International features more then 130 judokas from 14 countries and regions.
