Shoe factory fire claims five lives
( 2003-10-21 01:24) (Xinhua)

A fire at a shoe factory Sunday in Yueqing City, east China's Zhejiang Province, killed five people and injured another five.

Ten workers were in the workshop when the blaze started, but only five escaped, said Zhou Pingjian, a survivor.

The fire started around 10:30 p.m. Sunday and the blaze soon ignited barrels of paint nearby. As a result, the whole workshop was engulfed in flames and several neighboring workshops also caught fire, said Chen Ping, another survivor.

Fire fighters took over three hours to put out the fire and find the five bodies.

The five injured were hospitalized and one was in a serious condition, said Ye Shengjie, a doctor at the local hospital.

The factory was located at the juncture of Yuejia village and Qiyuan village of Yueqing City and all the victims were rural workers from east China's Anhui Province and southwest China's Guizhou Province.

Local officials have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.
