Schools trial bilingual education
( 2003-10-10 09:51) (Xinhua)

Shanghai is actively promoting "bilingual teaching" among its elementary and high schools this semester.

Around 30,000 schoolchildren, across 19 urban districts and suburban counties, are benefiting from the programme, a local source said.

"Bilingual teaching" refers to the use of both Chinese and English in teaching.

Wang Wenlong is principal of a bilingual school run jointly by Shanghai Foreign Studies University and the education department in the Yangpu District.

"To popularize English is the basis for bilingual education," Wang said.

His school has increased the number of English classes and organized outdoor activities to enhance the students' English listening and speaking skills.
