China sweep all diving golds at Daegu Universiade
( 2003-08-31 10:32) (Xinhua)

China pulled off the last four diving golds on offer on Saturday at the 22nd World University Games to bag all 12 titles home, repeating their fete in the last Universiade.

Sun Na and Zhang Jun triumphed in the women's 10-meter platform synchronized while Tian Liang and Yang Jinghui won in the men's.

China also clinched both the group titles to finish the gold sweep.

Former Olympic winner Sun and Zhang were followed close at heel by Chon Hyon Ju and Kim Gyung Ju, from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea during the match before they prevailed on 295.53 points.

Olympic champion Tian and national champion Yang, in their first-time partnership, secured the title on 358.68.

"I am satisfied with my athletes in this Universiade," said Chinese diving team leader Zhou Jihong. "They put on a good performance throughout the competition and took all the golds."

World champion Wu Minxia wrapped up three titles in women's 1-meter and 3-meter springboard as well as the synchronized 3-meter with Guo Jingjing, who partnered Wu to the synchronized 3-meter at the Barcelona World Championships last month.

Wang Feng rounded up with the men's 1m title while world bronze medalist Wang Tianling took the 3m springboard gold after Peng Bo and Wang Kenan triumphed in the men's 3m synchronized.

Sun finished first in the platform event while Tian grabbed the men's title.

China wrapped up all the 12 gold medals in the Beijing Universiade two years ago.

"The continual competitions put my athletes' stamina and mentality to tests," said Zhou, adding that divers soon will be in the national trial for the Athens Olympic Games early in September.

"They earned experience here and came to know what they should do to improve on,"said Zhou.

"They will have to work harder to compete well in the next Olympics," she added.
