Journalists to write whatever they like if Beijing holds 2008 Games

MOSCOW -- Beijing Olympic bid organisers said here Thursday the world's media will enjoy full freedom to report on all aspects of China if the 2008 Olympic Games is held in the city.

"I think we will give the media complete freedom to report when they come to China," Wang Wei, secretary-general of the Beijing bid committee, told a news conference.

"We have made our guarantees in our bid document so all the world's media will be welcome to come to China."

Beijing, which lost to Sydney by only two votes in its bid to host the 2000 Games, is one of the front-runners to win Friday's vote by the International Olympic Committee.

Toronto and Paris are the other front-runners with the two remaining candidates, Istanbul and Osaka, regarded as outsiders, according to analysts.

When asked by the human rights, Wang said many aspects of social development in China, including human rights, had improved since the country had been opened up to the rest of the world.

"We are confident that the Games coming to China not only promotes our economy but also enhances all social conditions, including education, health and human rights," he said.
