With international acts, homegrown talent and a range of venues across the city, China Shanghai International Arts Festival is set to turn the city into a creative hub throughout the coming month. Zhang Kun reports.

From ballet and opera to acrobats and children's theater, the 16th China Shanghai International Arts Festival (CSIAF) has something for everyone.

The festival will kick off on Oct 17 with the premiere of an original opera The River of Spring at Shanghai Grand Theatre. A monthlong program of ballet, music, acrobats and children's theater will run until Nov 16.

Forty-five stage shows are part of the official program, with more than half from overseas. More than one third of them are having their premiere at the festival.

"We manage to bring to Shanghai the highest quality groups from the world to present their finest creations every year," says Liu Wenguo, artistic director of the CSIAF.

Besides the continuous efforts to lower ticket prices, made possible by subsidies from the municipality, CSIAF has pushed the boundaries to make the festival accessible to the widest audience possible.
