Laws urged to protect police from attack

After cases like a traffic policeman being dragged to death by a SUV driver in Shanghai on March 11, how to guarantee the safety of police officers on duty has again gripped the public.

Laws are needed to protect policemen from attack, said Zhu Yuliang, deputy manager of the Haidian branch of Beijing Security Service General Company, in his proposal at the Third Session of the 12th National People's Congress.

The number of attacks on police officers rose from 7,268 in 2010 to 12,327 in 2013, up 70 percent, according to a report from Beijing Morning Post on Saturday,

About 9,835 cases involving assaults on police officers, including 7,956 cases of slight injuries and 23 deaths, were investigated in 2013, the report said.
