Human rights experts called for the establishment of a United Nations organ to help set up an international legal framework to regulate cyberspace at the Fifth Beijing Forum on Human Rights on Dec 13.

The UN should consider setting up an organ that will help establish an international framework to regulate cyberspace, said Otto Kolbl, a researcher at the German Department of the Lausanne University, who represented a panel of experts who exchanged views on the Internet and human rights.

Kolbl said mutual respect for culture is also important in solving human rights issues caused by the Internet.

The two-day forum began on Dec 12 and focused on science and technology, the environment and human rights.

The First Beijing Forum on Human Rights was held in 2008, and the forum has been held on an annual basis.
