Mobile service restored in quake-hit Yingjiang

BEIJING - Mobile phone services and power supply have been restored in Yingjiang county in Southwest China's Yunnan province after a 5.8-magnitude earthquake hit the region, telecom and power grid operators said Saturday.

China Telecom, one of China's major telecommunications companies, said its CDMA base stations in Yingjiang and the neighboring Lianghe county were all back to service.

China Mobile, the country's largest mobile operator, said all of its base stations and telecommunication cables were repaired, and mobile services are available in the county seat of Yingjiang and the villages.

Power supply in Yingjiang resumed Saturday noon after Yunnan Power Grid Co sent rescue teams to repair power facilities damaged in the quake, said a spokesman with power operator China Southern Power Grid, parent of the Yunan company.

Meanwhile, local health departments have dispatched a team of 60 people to sterilize the quake-stricken region, especially the shelters, to prevent epidemic outbreaks, said Zhou Yun, deputy director of Yinjiang's public health bureau.

More than 700 medical staff are working in Yinjiang to treat the injured and keep people healthy, Zhou said.

A 5.8-magnitude earthquake jolted Yingjiang county near the border with Myanmar Thursday noon, leaving 25 people dead and more than 250 others injured including 134 seriously. About 127,100 residents have been evacuated to safe areas.
