BEIJING - China's National Meteorological Center (NMC) is continuing its second highest level alert for parts of southern China battling freezing temperatures and icy rain, as more bad weather is expected.

The NMC Thursday forecast freezing rain -- which quickly turns into ice on the ground -- for central and northern Guizhou Province, western Hunan Province and the northeastern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

Ice has caused mayhem in many parts of Guizhou over the past week, closing roads and stranding thousands of people in their cars.

Icy rain and freezing temperatures caused chaos in southern China in January 2008, resulting in traffic deadlocks and power blackouts.

However, this year's freeze is unlikely to cause so much chaos, weather experts say.
