Flood control and anti-drought work was hugely important to the steady development and social stability of China, one of the world's most disaster-prone countries, Hui said at a national conference to honor model institutions and individuals for their outstanding conduct after the massive mudslides in northwestern China's Zhouqu County.

Hui ordered local authorities to step up efforts to rebuild mudslide-hit areas in Zhouqu County, and enhance disaster alleviation and emergency response capabilities.

This year, China had experienced severe drought in the southwest, typhoons along the southeast coast, and an earthquake and landslides in northwestern regions.

The most recent official figures showed that, as of the end of August, floods, landslides and mud-rock flows in China had killed 3,185 people and left 1,067 missing this year.
