China grants waste handling equipment to Kathmandu

Kathmandu -- At the time when the collection and disposal of garbage from Kathmandu has been halted since past four days, the Chinese government has handed over 138 sets of waste handling equipment and 4,000 garbage bins to the Nepali government on Friday.
Heaps of garbage has been piled up on the streets of Kathmandu since four days after collection and disposal of garbage has been obstructed by some locals of Kathmandu's landfill site in central Nepal demanding suitable employment opportunities.
Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) is optimist of handling garbage efficiently and effectively in coming days. "I'm hopeful of the grant provide by the Chinese government to KMC will support garbage management system of Kathmandu," said Ananda Raj Pokharel, Chief Executive Officer of KMC.
Similarly, Rabin Man Shrestha, Chief of Environment Management Division in KMC told Xinhua that KMC used to manage garbage in traditional way carrying garbage in open truck but from now onwards, KMC will manage garbage in systematic way with the help of China's granted modern technology.
"This modern waste handling equipment granted by China will support KMC to manage garbage of Kathmandu in modern way. Since these equipment are Euro-3 standard, it will also help to reduce emission of garbage in the city and increase the promptness in the work," Shrestha added.
Earlier, KMC used to transport garbage from Kathmandu city in a open truck to the disposal landfill site but granted equipment will help KMC to transport garbage in closed manner.
The 138 sets of waste handling equipment includes three garbage trucks, 30 self loading machines, 50 hermetic garbage trucks, two fecal suction trucks, four road sprinkles, among others.
Meanwhile, Chinese ambassador to Nepal Qiu Guohong said, "I believe these equipment will play a positive role in improving Kathmandu's appearance, creating a more comfortable living environment for its citizens and promoting further development of its economy and society."
He linked 2010 World Expo in Shanghai and said, "The theme of the Expo is 'better city, better life'. I sincerely hope that a clean and neat Kathmandu with good environment will gradually unfold in front of the people and everyone living in Kathmandu will embrace a better life.
