The first book to explain the symbolism of China's national flag, the five-starred red flag that has been in use for more than 60 years, is ready for readers, publishers said at a press conference Friday. A documentary film on the national flag has been produced as well.

The book, Wuxing Hongqi in Chinese (the Five-Starred Red Flag), was funded by the General Political Department of the People's Liberation Army and took five years to complete. It consists of 40 stories involving grassroots citizens and soldiers, and is intended to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the National Flag Law that falls on June 28.

"The flag represents our country, but a large number of people don't know clearly what the five stars signify," said Tian Yaping, director of the film. "The stars represent the union of all ethnicities of China."

The book and film will be on the market in Taiwan and Hong Kong soon, according to Liu Tai, who edited the book.
