NANNING - Three pupils were killed and another 21 injured after a retaining wall on campus collapsed Wednesday in Bobai County in southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, county officials said.

The accident happened at around 3:40 pm Wednesday at Guihua Village Primary School in Bobai when a group of pupils were having classes on the school's play ground, a spokesman with the county government said.

The retaining wall under construction suddenly collapsed, injuring more than 20 pupils, the spokesman said, adding that the injured were rushed to hospital where three died later.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
