The defendant, Zeng Jianfeng, was sentenced to death for murdering the younger brother of his ex-wife by the Intermediate People's Court of Fuzhou City, the provincial capital.

Zeng was also found guilty of kidnapping, intentionally injuring others and robbery, according to the court statement.

The sentence also included the confiscation of all Zeng's personal property and the lifetime deprivation of his political rights, said the statement.

On April 5 morning, Zeng stabbed the brother of his ex-wife, Zhan Kuanlin, to death at Zhan's home -- five days after the couple got divorced. He also injured his ex-wife and a security guard who tried to stop him, it said.

Zeng grabbed a motorcycle from a passerby and drove to the First Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University.

He barged into a ward and took hostage three infants, three woman recovering from giving birth, a pregnant woman and a hospital worker. By noon, police managed to subdue Zeng and rescued the eight people who were unharmed.
