HEFEI:Health authorities in east China's Anhui Province confirmed Wednesday that 15 renal patients had been infected with hepatitis C after receiving dialysis at a local hospital.

Six patients reported having contracted hepatitis C at the Yicheng Hospital to the health bureau on December 21 last year, said a spokesman with the publicity department of the Anqing city committee of the Communist Party of China.

Yicheng Hospital aided by the experts sent by the Anqing City Health Bureau then provided free health checks for 77 dialysis patients, the spokesman said.

Preliminary blood tests showed 39 of them were infected with hepatitis C, but only 15 were confirmed to have contracted the disease at the dialysis clinic, he said.

"Hepatitis C has a latent period from two weeks to half a year. And there's a chance that some of the patients may have had the disease before taking the dialysis treatment," he said.

All the patients confirmed to have contracted hepatitis C at the Yicheng Hospital would receive free treatment, the spokesman said.
