BEIJING: China reiterated on Wednesday its firm opposition to United States arms sales to Taiwan.

"We strongly oppose US arms sales to Taiwan and our stance is consistent, clear and resolute,"  Yang Yi, spokesman of the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, told reporters.

He was responding to a reporter's question on a story in Taiwan's "China Times" newspaper on Wednesday, saying the Obama administration would sell 66 F-16 jet fighters to Taiwan.

US arms sales to Taiwan remain a major obstacle to the healthy growth of the military-to-military relations between China and the United States, Vice-Chairman of the Central Military Commission Xu Caihou said during a visit to the United States in late October.
