China's grain output is expected to reach 550 billion kilograms by 2020, said China's top economic planner, National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the People's Daily reported Thursday.

The State Council, China’s cabinet, rolled out a productivity program for 50 billion kg grain output growth in the next 10 years. NDRC announced the plans at a news conference Thursday.

An NDRC official told reporters the country is hopeful to reach the productivity goal, despite facing a series of present barriers, including challenging climate conditions and a lack of land and water resources.

Possible solutions China plans to utilize include advancing irrigation systems and preserving farmland. In addition, the country will continue to support building up agriculture infrastructure by distributing governmental subsides to farmers, reforming the grain circulation system, and encouraging agricultural technology innovation.
