More than 40,000 tips provided by local residents have helped officials crack down on gangs and 80% of those who reported the tips gave their real names, Chongqing publicity officials told a press conference Thursday, Xinhuanet reported.

Residents handed in clues to police through text messages, phone calls and visits to government.

Zhou Bo, deputy director of the Municipality's publicity department, said gangs have severely harmed social development and are bound to be crashed. The success of the campaign is closely in part from public support, he said.

He said media nationwide also helped with the crackdown.
