HANGZHOU: At least one person was confirmed dead and two others were injured in a gas explosion at an open-air grocery market in East China's Zhejiang province early Wednesday morning.

The blast went off at around 7 am in Zhanongkou community in the provincial capital Hangzhou, the city's fire brigade confirmed.

Fire fighters found a dead body in the rubble of a hut that toppled in the explosion, an officer with the brigade said. "Two people suffered injuries and were sent to hospital."

The officers said rescue work was continuing because witnesses said several others were feared to be trapped in the ruins.

Police said the explosion was caused by gas leak.
