NANCHANG: A woman was beaten to death in east China's Jiangxi Province after she was suspected of shoplifting in a Walmart supermarket, police confirmed Tuesday.

Police have arrested two suspects and put another three under control, said a police officer surnamed Jin in charge of publicity in the Zhushan sub-branch of Jingdezhen police bureau.

According to police, the victim, a 37-year-old female named Yu Xiaochun, was said to have stolen something from a Walmart supermarket in Jingdezhen city at 7:40 pm on August 30. A worker, surnamed Yu, asked four others to intercept her.

Yu refused to show the five people her invoice from the supermarket, saying that they were not wearing the uniform of Walmart. She was then beaten and sent to hospital.

Yu died last Wednesday evening.

Jin declined to give more details, saying the investigation is underway.

Yu's sister-in-law told Xinhua that compensation is being discussed.
