Senior official gets 11-year imprisonment over bribery

SHENYANG: A senior official in Liaoyang City in northeastern China's Liaoning Province, has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for taking bribes and illegal possession of a vast quantity of property.

Jia Chengwei, former vice secretary general of the city's Communist Party of China (CPC) committee, had accepted 120,000 yuan (US$17,566), US$50,000 and five plasma and LCD TV sets as bribes, said the Intermediate People's Court in Liaoyang Wednesday.

He took the bribes, for which he granted preferential treatment in environmental reviews among other favors, when he was the director of the municipal bureau of environmental protection between 2005 and 2007.

Jia also failed to account for another 2.15 million yuan worth of property.

The former official will not appeal the sentence which was delivered last Friday, the court said.
