Taiwan's Ma: Typhoon deaths to exceed 500

TAIPEI: Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou said on Friday he expected the death toll from a typhoon that hit the island to exceed 500 after officials said hundreds of people were believed buried in mudslides.

Ma gave his estimate at a security meeting, his aide said. The current official death toll is 117.

Typhoon Morakot caused widespread mudslides, smashed houses and severed roads and bridges in southern Taiwan when it swept across the island last weekend.
