3 dead, 3 missing in central, SW China flood

WUHAN: Three people were killed and three others missing as torrential rains hit central and southwest China, local government officials said Tuesday.

Three villagers in Xunxi County, Hubei Province, were swept away by a flood Monday afternoon when crossing a bridge. Two bodies have been recovered while the third is missing, said the county government.

The county received up to 60 mm of rainfall on Sunday and Monday.

An elderly couple in Tongliang County of the neighboring Chongqing Municipality were also swept away by floodwaters on their way home Monday morning and remained missing Tuesday, the municipal flood control headquarters said.

The Tongliang county seat received 227.8 mm of rainfall Monday, the most on the record since 1951, the Chongqing observatory said.

Another person in Chongqing was killed by a falling wire pole during the rain.
